GrapheneOS Duress at Customs
Just saw this article about someone using GrapheneOS giving the CBP a duress passcode to wipe his phone instead of the real one when demanded by the CBP.I have thoughts.
- I guess he thought they could hack his phone if he didn't give them a passcode? Why not just refuse? That's odd.
- I wonder if using GrapheneOS caused them to pay more attention to his device?
- If you have an OS on your phone with a duress passcode it should swap the login over to a clean set of apps and data that looks plausible so they don't think you've wiped the phone.
Oddly I've never had my phone or devices searched going through customs. I'm paranoid about them wanting to do that so I usually clear all the random junk off my phone before travelling.
Not that I ever have anything on my phone that would get me in trouble of course. :p Just that I don't want customs sifting through my personal shit.
It's absurd and wrong that customs can search through your devices but to me the solution is just not to have anything on there that you don't want them to see. Encrypt all your data securely and upload it to a remote backup service online somewhere. Then when you reach your destination download whatever you need and decrypt it.
It isn't that I don't want customs seeing something naughty. It's that I don't want customs seeing -anything- of mine. Just like I object to customs getting scans of my ding dong with their nudie scanner.
It's not that I really care who sees my ding dong. It's that I don't want customs seeing it, because fuck them.
I don't really have anywhere profound to go with this rant about customs besides saying that customs sucks. So, uh, yeah. That's it. :shrug:
